About this course

AI is already part of your phone, your social media and your schoolwork, but most people have never been shown how it works. This course introduces JHS and SHS students to the ideas behind modern Artificial Intelligence without assuming prior knowledge of AI or programming. Students will explore how the human brain inspired artificial neural networks, how machines learn from data, and why data is so important to AI. They will then build a mental map of the AI landscape, distinguishing machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, language AI, and computer vision. Finally, students will look under the hood of GPTs—understanding what GPT means, how these models are built, how they predict what comes next, and what that means for the answers they produce, including the influence of Western-dominated training data.

What you'll learn

  • What AI is, and how it was inspired by the human brain
  • How a machine learns from data by guessing, checking and adjusting
  • Why the data an AI is trained on shapes everything it says and does
  • How AI, machine learning, deep learning and generative AI fit together
  • How tools like ChatGPT build an answer one word at a time
